I've post...
I've posted this as a commen to something Linda has written, but since it's an old post, maybe not everyone will read it... and I thought it could have been an interesting topic.It's about dubbed movies:Actually I find it annoying as well, even if I'm used since in Italy we JUST have dubbed movies in theaters (not like in France, for example, that you can choose whether to see it dubbed or with subtitles). So when I really really like a movie I always get (hire or buy) the DVD as soon as it comes out, in order to watch the original version: it sometimes changes A LOT, actors can give so much different voice's expressions from the ones given by dubbers!!Then... the ONE thing that take me off the most: Pino Insegno. He's one of the most famous (and gifted, I must admit) Italian dubbers, but... he's most known as tv comician. A VERY silly comician... So, when you hear his voice, you immediately think about his stupid gags; and, when this voice is put on the body of the movie's hero, to me it makes him lack of credibility :SFor example he's dubber of Aragorn... ARAGORN!!! My hero!! Dubbed by a silly comician!!! *boooooh...* I was watching LOTR and shaking my head saying "No, no, no" all the time when Aragorn was speaking :_(Then I got used to it (or, moreover, I realized it was way too stupid to ruin the watch of LOTR because of this!), but when I watch LOTR on dvd (which happens pretty often ^__^) I watch it in the original version: I loooove Viggo's voice!!

not as annoying as dubbing, but somehow anyway. i own a bunch of lotr posters from the return of the king, and on some there are some quotes from the movie. in dutch! what in the movie sounds so cool, sounds soooo stupid and childish in dutch. i hate my language. blah
I totally agree with you about dubbing movies - it's a very annoying thing and I hate it!As to Pino Insegno...I have actually met him and I can say that he is not only hilarious (in person as well, not only when he's on tv doing his gags!), but he's also a rather smart person, probably more intelligent and cultured than most tv stars...If that can help you when watching LOTR in Italian! ;o)
...yes, of course, actually I'm not saying that he is not; I even must admit he is very gifted as a dubber...The only thing is that, whenever I hear his voice, I think about his gags (that I find stupid), and I'm not able to concentrate on the charachter he's dubbing... I almost can't take it seriously :PIt's not only a matter of LOTR, it has happened also in other movies... all Brad Pitt's movies, for example.It's not that I consider him stupid, just his gags are, to me ;)
No, I didn't know Brad Pitt's voice was the one of Pino Insegno!!I guess I'm lucky because I don't recognize the voices, so they don't remind me of the real person who is talking :)You are all right about dubbed movies but... I think there are also some positive aspects in dubbed movies, for me at least ;)First, I don't like reading the subtitles... You can't concentrate well on the images, because your eyes must focus on reading. All the immediacy is broken, is like conversing though an interpreter :( I don't like it that much. Second, a lot of actors, especially American "celebrities", are not good actors after all, while our dubbers are just great actors. I've always been fascinated by the way dubbers act. They are not only actors, they are super actors, because they manage to amaze you with their voice only. Sometimes it happens that dubbers are better actors than the original ones, so the dubbed movie is actually better than the original one ;) lolIn general, I think the best thing would be being able to understand a movie in original language without the need of subtitles...
when i watch a movie, i usually don't read the subtitles, as english has become so normal to me, i don't really need to. Plus, i often watch movies and tvshows on the bbc, and of course there are no dutch subtitles there. I think it's just a matter of what you're used to.
